Repeat Prescriptions

Patients should order their medications via the following methods:

  • Medicines Order Line (MOL) provided by Joined Up Care Derbyshire. Telephone (01246) 588860 from 09:00 until 16:00, Monday to Friday. Leaflets providing further information on this new service are available from your local pharmacy.  Alternatively you can click here to view the online information.
  • Online via the SystmOnline prescription service - please have your Username and Password ready as you will need these to log into the repeat prescription service.

To avoid any gaps in medication you must submit any prescription requests at least one week prior to you needing the medication.  For example, running out of medication completely or going on a long holiday.

If you are waiting for a prescription to be authorised, please allow up to 3 workings days (72 hours) for this to take place. Delays may occur when clinical members of staff are absent from work due to annual leave or sick leave.

To register for this service at our Practice, please complete this form and return it to a member of our Reception Team alongside a form of personal ID.

 

Nominate a Pharmacy

Killamarsh Medical Practice is now asking all patients to sign up to a local pharmacy of their choice.  This will save valuable time for our Practice staff and will make things easier for you.

Your prescription will be sent electronically to your nominated pharmacy, ready for you to collect your medications.

You can sign up to this service at any pharmacy or by asking one of our Receptionists to nominate your preferred local pharmacy.  However, if you nominate a pharmacy which is not local to the Practice please ensure you allow plenty of time between ordering your medication and receiving it.

We are not responsible for the delivery times of your nominated pharmacy.

Problems contacting the Medicines Order Line (MOL)

Recently we have been receiving an increasing number of complaints from patients who are unable to get through to the Medicines Order Line to reorder medication.  We have been in contact with the Derbyshire Prescription Service and received the following reply:

"Unfortunately, we are really busy at this time of year with calls coming through. Please ask your patients to keep trying. Alternatively, if any patients have access to the internet, please forward them to our online ordering form. There is no requirement to create an account or have a log in, they just fill in their details and what medication they want to order, and it comes through to us to process (without us having to call them back).

Also, for any patients due over Christmas and New Year, we are accepting prescription requests up to 14 days early as opposed to the usual 7 days before their due date so it supports patients in getting their medication in enough time."

The Medicine Order Line's aim is for patients to use an ordering method which best suits them and for the MOL telephone lines to be available to patients who are digitally excluded due to no online access.

Help with NHS costs

In England, around 90% of prescription items are dispensed free. This includes exemptions from charging for those on low incomes, such as:

  • those on specific benefits or through the NHS Low Income Scheme
  • those who are age exempt
  • those with certain medical conditions

NHS Charges

These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.

  • Prescription (per item): £9.65
  • 12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £111.60
  • 3-month PPC: £31.25

If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.

Hospital Requests

Medication following discharge from hospital

When you are discharged from hospital you should normally receive 7-14 days supply of medication, depending upon the hospital.

On receipt of your medication requirements, which will be issued to you by the hospital, please bring this to the Practice or post via a stamped addressed envelope before your supply of medication has run out.

Once discharged from hospital, the hospital should send the Practice your discharge documentation.  It is important to note that we can only prescribe your medication upon receipt of this documentation.  Hospital requests for change of medication will be checked within the Practice first, and if necessary you will be issued with a prescription.  The Practice will endeavour to issue you with your prescription on that day, but it cannot be issued until your medical details are checked.  Your prescription should normally be ready by 16:30 on that day, or you may be advised to attend the next day.

Sample requests

If you are given a sample form from your hospital Consultant you must bring this form with you to your appointment at the Practice.  Failure to do so will delay the processing of your sample.

Should you bring a sample with you from home please ensure it is labelled with your full name and date of birth.  It must be handed to a member of our Reception Team before 15:00, Monday to Friday.  Any unidentifiable samples with be disposed of.

Digital prescriptions in the NHS App

As of 30 January 2024, patients in England can use the NHS App to view all their prescription details, order repeat prescriptions, and generate a barcode that can be shown to a pharmacy for collection without a paper prescription from their GP.
 
This will positively impact on General Practice workload as each repeat prescription ordered electronically saves GP Practices three minutes of time, with those ordered using the App expected to save the equivalent of 1.85 million hours in 2024.  Learn more about digital prescriptions in the NHS App here.

Benefits for patients 

  • patients can see all their prescription details in one secure place, giving them greater visibility and control of their healthcare
  • patients have confidence their prescription is being managed and can query issues earlier
  • patients don’t need to travel unnecessarily to collect paper tokens(if they have a non-nominated pharmacy)

Benefits for prescribers 

  • prescribers may see a reduction in calls from patients to query prescription status as they can see it’s being managed
  • prescribers will no longer need to print prescription tokens, lowering costs and saving time
  • prescribers will need to send fewer text messages with prescription ID during out-of-hours prescribing, reducing SMS costs

Benefits for dispensers 

  • dispensers may see a reduction in calls from patients to query prescription status as they can see it’s being managed
  • dispensers will save time as prescription queries can be handled prior to collection
  • dispensers can scan digital barcodes instead of manually searching for prescriptions, saving them time
